If you've compared feminine probiotics, you've probably seen Bacillus coagulans on a label — including ours. It's a genuinely interesting probiotic with real strengths and honest limits. Here's what it is, why its name keeps changing, and what the research actually supports.
The name game: Bacillus, Weizmannia, Heyndrickxia
First, the confusing part — because getting this right is part of being a trustworthy source. This organism has been reclassified twice as genetics improved:
- Originally described as Bacillus coagulans (back in 1915).
- Reclassified to Weizmannia coagulans by Gupta and colleagues in 2020, when the sprawling Bacillus genus was split into multiple new genera (LPSN).
- Reclassified again to Heyndrickxia coagulans in 2023 on further genetic evidence.
All three names refer to the same species. To add to the fun, older literature sometimes called it “Lactobacillus sporogenes,” which was never technically correct. Because most research and product labels still say Bacillus coagulans, that's the name you'll most often see — but now you know why a scientific write-up might say Weizmannia or Heyndrickxia.
What kind of probiotic is it?
It's a Gram-positive, spore-forming, lactic-acid-producing bacterium (review, Annals of Microbiology). Two features make it popular in supplements:
- It forms spores. That protective shell lets it survive heat, shelf storage, and — importantly — the acidic stomach, so more of it can reach the intestines intact. This is exactly why it suits shelf-stable formats like gummies.

Some individual, branded strains have been studied in a vaginal context, but the vaginal evidence for the species as a whole is far less developed than for Lactobacillus strains, which dominate the healthy vaginal microbiome. So the fair summary is: a hardy, safe, well-tolerated probiotic with excellent stability and strong digestive/immune credentials, and a supporting — not headline — role in the vaginal-balance conversation.
